Sun Microsystems has recently announced the availability of its new Unified Storage Systems, the Sun Storage 7000 family. Also know as Amber Road, the initial release includes three products: the Sun Storage 7110, 7210, and 7410.

The Center for Clinical Imaging Research (CCIR) within Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University's School of Medicine in St. Louis is using BlueArc's Titan to provide back-end storage for a VMware virtual server environment serving the Center's bioimaging research. CCIR is using Titan as the backend for 60-plus VMware ESX virtual machines.

LaCie has introduced a new four-bay RAID that supports capacities up to 6 TB. Designed for desktop storage, the new 4big Quadra array will be available in 2 TB, 4 TB, and 6 TB configurations with support for RAID 0 and RAID 5 configurations.

The University of South Carolina has upgraded its server and storage technologies to support research in bioinformatics and processing of medical images. The university adopted server and storage solutions for SGI, including the company's SGI Altix 4700 system and InfiniteStorage 4000.

Liberty University has installed a storage area network (SAN) from Network Appliance (NetApp) to accommodate an increase in enrollment and a greater reliance on digital information. The school has 11,300 resident students and 39,000 distance learners.

The Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10), a group of sports teams from 10 colleges and universities, has expanded the use of its BlueArc Titan storage solution housed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to store dozens of terabytes of game footage. In the 2008-2009 season, all of the Pac-10 football, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball teams will access opponents' video for competitive analysis from Titan storage.

Randolph College, formerly Randolph-Macon Women's College, has upgraded its storage to an IP-based storage area network (SAN) from StoneFly. The Lynchburg, VA-based school implemented the StoneFly Hybrid Storage Concentrator (HSC), an iSCSI SAN with 8 TB of capacity, after evaluating solutions from several vendors.

Tallahassee Community College in Florida has revamped its administrative infrastructure, switching over to IBM software, servers, and storage systems, according to information provided to us by IBM. Mainline Information Systems, an IBM partner, worked with IBM and the college on the implementation.

The University of Miami reported Thursday that computer back-up tapes containing personal information from some 2.1 million patients were stolen from a third-party storage facility in March. The university said it's confident that the information on those tapes is inaccessible to the thieves but is notifying patients anyway.

HP has introduced several products to address data protection and compliance in storage environments, including add-ons that do automated data encryption on tape drives and libraries. Among the offerings: a secure fabric switch; an encryption kit for tape autoloaders and libraries; integration of compliance and management appliances; and, a free online security assessment tool.
